THE SCIENCE OF SOCIAL SWEATS

THE SCIENCE OF SOCIAL SWEATS
04/02/2025 Manor

Firstly – London’s social fitness scene is thriving. Big up all the clubs, communities & collectives bringing people together through movement!

Secondly – We all know that working out is good for us and releases those feel good chemicals. But have you ever wondered why group fitness sessions or events can often feel more euphoric than training solo? There’s more science behind it than you might think.

Syncro Burpees?

A study from Oxford University found that participants in group workouts experienced significantly higher endorphin levels than those who trained the same movements alone. This study found that rowers who trained together in synchro experienced a greater increase in pain tolerance compared to when they trained individually.

Syncrosation shifts our brain from ‘me’ to ‘we’, & as social creatures & our brains & hormones love it!

The “Kohler Effect”: You Work Harder in Groups

The Kohler Effect is the tendency to perform better & push yourself harder when exercising in the presence of others, interestingly, especially when those around you are slightly more skilled.

A 2012 study in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine found that participants working out with a fitter partner increased their workout intensity by up to 24%.

The Power of Accountability

When someone’s expecting you to show up, whether it’s a training partner or a group session, you’re far less likely to hit snooze or skip the session.

A study published in Health Psychology revealed that individuals who exercised with friends or groups were 45% more likely to maintain their fitness routines compared to those training alone.  It’s not about ‘guilt’, but rather, belonging.

Make promises to yourself through your promises to others.

The Flow State

Flow is a psychological state where individuals become fully immersed and engaged in an activity, experiencing a sense of timelessness and effortless concentration. Introduced by psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, this is often described as being “in the zone”.

When individuals move in harmony, their brain waves will synchronise. This is neural synchrony.

Find your flow.
