“The 1% are there for a reason – they didn’t give up when shit got hard.”
Take us back, what inspired you to start competing in CrossFit and how did your competitive journey begin?
I watched a CrossFit documentary called ‘the Fittest’ and was like ‘I NEED to be there’ (at the CrossFit games) then went to my first individual competition alone, after doing a year of classes came 8th and I just loved the kick of adrenaline that being on the comp floor gave me!
What does competition mean to you?
Getting to show off all the hard work you’ve done behind the scenes in a pressured environment; which is a real privilege!
How do you handle setbacks, like injuries or performance struggles, and stay focused on your goals?
I just think about the end goal and about the fact that everyone who gets to the top level, the 1% are there for a reason… because they didn’t give up when shit got hard.
What motivates you on the days when you don’t feel like training or when you hit a plateau?
I don’t really think about motivation. I think motivation is needed if you aren’t passionate enough about your end goal and need something to take your mind off it in order to get there. However, if you want something bad enough, discipline will get you there because you’ll do it no matter how you feel.
Do you have any pre-competition rituals or routines?
I like to just drink a ton of caffeine and between events go off somewhere quiet alone on a walk and just repeat the workout strategies over in my head.
What’s your favourite lift, and why?
The snatch, because it’s so technical it requires years to perfect. Even after 4 years of CrossFit I’ve always got something to focus on.
Competing in teams or competing alone?
Personally I thrive under the pressure of being alone more than on a team. Also because you don’t have to rely on anyone but yourself, you have your own strategy that works for you and because you know that any other individual competitor is just out for a dog fight not a good time.
What advice would you give to someone competing for the first time?
Plan your workouts, eat lotssss of carbs, don’t put too much pressure on yourself, just do what you can and if there’s a movement in a workout you’re not too good at, make the rest of the workout work for you.
